The Church of San Lorenzo was born as a religious centre of the castle and the village of Vergelle in the medieval period. Originally it was a subsidiary of the nearby Pieve di Pava, and in the XII century it passed from the Diocese of Arezzo, within which it was located, to the Diocese of Pienza.
During the following century, the church was radically restored. During the XVIII and XIX centuries, it was embellished with various works and with the side altars.
The church was restored in 1986 by the Pastor Don Benito Taghizadeh and again in the 2001.
