The origins of Contignano are ancient and definitely prior to the construction of Abbadia San Salvatore, Monte Amiata (979). Some scholars believe that a Roman villa, dating back to the 2nd-3rd century,was the first settlement; this villa was located a little further down than where arose the castle of which still exist on the formwork, doors and walls.
